Explanatory Factors for the Persistence over Time of Unmet Need for Family Planning among Women in Union in Côte d'Ivoire.

Tiassigué KONE, University Alassane Ouattara Of Bouake

Despite efforts following the 1994 International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) recommendations, contraceptive use remains low in Côte d'Ivoire, with unmet need for family planning persisting over time. The study aims to understand the factors contributing to this persistence and provide insights for policy action. It addresses the question: What factors explain the persistence of unmet need in family planning over time? Using data from 1994, 1998-1999, and 2011-2012 DHS-MICS in Côte d'Ivoire, focusing on women aged 15-49 in union, the study employs multinomial logistic regression to assess factors related to unmet need for FP. Significant variables include region of residence, ethnicity, household wealth, age, age at first union, and number of children born alive. The research identifies common and specific factors associated with spacing and limiting unmet need in FP, offering insights for comprehensive and integrated policy interventions to reduce unmet need in Côte d'Ivoire.
