Are Population Issues Mainstreamed into Climate Change Policies and Action in Nigeria? Evidence from a Systematic Review of National Climate Change Documents

Nnamdi Maduekwe, National Population Commission
Aisha Abdulazeez, National Population Commission, Nigeria

The linkages between population factors and climate change have strong implications for both national climate change policies. However it is not clear if population factors are sufficiently integrated (mainstreamed) into national climate policies and actions. Using a two stage systematic literature and document search and review procedure this study appraises the ‘population’ content and mainstreaming of Nigeria’s climate change policies. At the first stage a general/global review of the population climate change linkage literature is implemented to identify key issues and perspectives. At the second stage, the ‘population content’ and mainstreaming in some of Nigeria’s climate change policy and action documents are determined using a word search (Ctrl F) and contextual reading approach. The study will demonstrate a methodology for assessing population content of national climate policies, show the population content of key documents and the status of mainstreaming of population factors into climate policy and actions in the Nigeria.
