Objectives and rationale Gender transformative approaches (GTA) contribute to sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR), but there is not a comprehensive mapping of published articles about GTA to advance SRHR across Africa. We reviewed the definitions adopted, the conceptual frameworks used, the measurements and the principles followed. Method Searches through two online databases found 295 articles, of which 52 were selected , for full text thematic analysis. Result A diverse lexicon of terms refers to gender equality. GTA definitions mainly examine underlying gender norms and beliefs and address the root causes of gendered inequalities. Few articles explicitly presented a conceptual framework on how GTA contribute towards gender equality. However, implicit theories about GTA were described. Studies measured a range of gender and health outcomes, mostly at individual or interpersonal levels. Conclusion A diversity of terms, definitions, strategies, and measurement approaches are used for GTA for SRHR across Africa, likely influenced by different contexts and purposes.
